CSA - Community Supported Agriculture

Does anyone have any experience with / thoughts about a CSA - Community Supported Agriculture project?

I tried one this summer to suppliment what I have, and it didnt work out well. I paid $175 for the membership. On my first pickup, I got a small amount of milkweed flower pods and dandilion leaves...needless to say, I was disappointed. Next week, different stuff, but again, small amounts that wouldnt last a day (wasnt because of eating huge amounts). Then, one day I went to pick up, and they weren't even there. I felt I wasnt getting what I was paying for, so I asked for a refund.

Keep in mind, not all CSA's are this way. I know someone who partcipates in one who get tons of food for the same price I paid. Luck of the draw?

This is my suggestion. Before signing up for one, ask questions like: how much on average will you get back, what kind of products you will be getting, ask for references, etc.

For me, it would have been better going to farmer markets and/or buying additional seeds to plant.

I belong to a good one. There are three sizes offered. We chose the middle one...$15/week. $10 to join. Each week they send us a list of everything they offer and we reply back with what we choose. They have lots of veggie choices, pork and beef, fresh eggs and whole wheat flour. I'm really happy with it.

Saoirse,

I have experience belonging to one with the plan being to eventually run one of my own. I've done quite a bit of research on the whole concept.

You asked a lot of questions in your urban farming thread that I would have been happy to take the time to go into more detail about, but when I asked you questions or to be more specific, you never replied to me.

"Thoughts" is pretty ambiguous. What area are you specifically asking about or are you just wanting a general overview? Why are you asking it? Are you looking for help starting one or just asking if it is worth it to beliong to one?

I wouldn't expect much for only $175. Memberships to most CSAs range from $300-600 a year.

Like I said, I have spoken with several local people, and they are paying the same amount and getting much more than I am...and they are not getting milk weed flower pods.
